More about Animal testing

Have been thinking a lot about my previous post (and been meaning to post these thoughts on it for about a week...).

So, many new medicines can save many lives, which is definitely a good thing.

However, does this justify damaging another life to develop these?

I think there's a general idea that the lives of the humans who will benefit is far great than those of the animals that will suffer. Closer to home, etc. You just need to look at the press lately to see this is the case. However, if you remove personal bias (ie the pure selfish ideas of it being my species so I'll be the one to benefit as will those around me), then I can't see any reason why this should be the case. I can't see any other animals as having less right to live than me.

In that case, are the lives of the meny more important than that of the one. If the one is consenting to take the risk then yes probably, however, if not, I can just see that as a very dangerous way of justifying anything. Where do you draw the line with this? Consent seems the only sensible place, which pretty much rules out animal testing altogether as they can't.

As I say having new medicines has to be a good thing, but does the effect it has on the lives of those it helps justify any possible negetive results of the testing? The more I think about this, the less convinced I become.

Oh look... Even the internet's noticed my tendancy to over-analyse

You Have a Melancholic Temperament

Introspective and reflective, you think about everything and anything.
You are a soft-hearted daydreamer. You long for your ideal life.
You love silence and solitude. Everyday life is usually too chaotic for you.

Given enough time alone, it's easy for you to find inner peace.
You tend to be spiritual, having found your own meaning of life.
Wise and patient, you can help people through difficult times.

At your worst, you brood and sulk. Your negative thoughts can trap you.
You are reserved and withdrawn. This makes it hard to connect to others.
You tend to over think small things, making decisions difficult.

DERT

So, last weekend I went to Cambridge to visit thethirdvoice. On Saturday I then made a daytrip to York for DERT (the Dancing England Rapper Tournament). Wasn't in Thrales competition side this year, but they've told me they're expecting me to be next year (eeek!), so it was quite nice to experience the competition as a spectator first.

Having been told by the side that Thrales were a premier side and we'd be in the premier class, was very surprised to find us in the open when I got there. Some of the side were a little "miffed" about this, but at the end of the day, we do it for fun so what does it matter.

Spent the morning following Thrales around for the first 2 pubs then after lunch stayed where I was to see some of the other sides in the competition. Of the ones I saw on the day the Kingsmen must have been the most spectacular. Sandbeck were also very good, it was clear why they won last year.

Andy asked me if I'd like to be number 3 as John is now doing that for the Crownsmen, so he wants to move him so he's doing different positions for the 2 sides (avoid mix ups of style, etc), so it looks like I may be learning that in the near future (eeek! tumble!).

Didn't stay for the results as I had to get back to Cambridge, but was sent them afterwards to discover the nice suprise of us winning the Open (so being put there did pay off in the end). We came 5th overall, won the open, were runners up for the Tyzak Shield (for audience buzz factor in the dances) and also joint runners up for best characters (personally think that links in with the audience buzz as it's definitely got something to do with how the Tommy/Betty/etc work the audience).
