New Year

Ceilidh was good on New Years Eve. Our performance spot was quite early on in the evening, so we were free to enjoy the rest of the ceilidh afterwards without worrying about it.

We were also able to arrive early and practice together before the doors opened. Think the organisers were impressed that we were serious enough to do so, which was good. It was necessary, however, as 12 Maggots fell apart a couple of times during the practice and also Naomi had only learnt Mitcham's Corner on Tuesday (and I was doing it from a completely new position having not practiced it there before).

In the end we did four dances

12 Maggots, 2 sets of Fenland Safari, Green Fingers and 2 sets of Mitcham's Corner.

I was in 3 of the 4 dances, all except Green Fingers (not sure why I tend not to be put in Green Fingers when we use it for performance spots, imagine it's to do with being tall and height matching difficulties, which is a shame as it's one I quite enjoy).

The spot itself went really well, even if the floor was a little slippery.

The floor in Hitchin Town Hall was lovely to dance on in spite of this though (especially for the ceilidh) as it was a nice sprung floor with four trapdoors where the tension on the floor could be adjusted. It had been completely slackened off for the ceilidh and was like dancing on a wooden trampolene...

New Year's Day

Stayed in Cambridge after the ceilidh on New Year's Eve, mainly for Adam & Ruth's housewarming the following evening.

Went for a walk in the afternoon on New Year's Day, from Newmarket Road went to Stourbridge common and followed the river round to Magdalene, then went down Northampton Street and along the backs. Met up with the river again at the Mill and followed it across the meadows to Granchester. Then headed back to Newmarket Road, via trumpingdon, Long Road, Hills Road around the back streets to Coleridge Road and then cut across to Coldham's Lane and cross the common there. Was a little further then I was intended to go, but was quite nice.

Arrived back at Andrew & Emma's just in time to head over to the party.

Was good to see everyone in a more social setting (ie not on performance) as opportunities to do so seem much rarer since moving away. Did descend into dancing around the living room as these parties generally tend to.

Morris Sticks

...and so today, I have just carried 40 Morris Sticks across London (new sticks for the Hunt, which I collected whilst I was in Cambridge). Got a lift back to London with Martin, but then still had to get from Zone 4 North to Zone 4 South with the sticks.

Think my arms are now at least twice as long as they used to be...

...and my molly boots are still the other side of London!

On second thoughts maybe it wasn't such a good plan, but they're here now at least.
